Rabbits and Coffee go together in Haiti

I was first invited to consult in Haiti to assist in the development of the production of meat rabbits.  Benito Jasmin of Makouti Agro Entreprise had a huge vision that is becoming a reality now in Haiti.

The following blog report is from Partners of the Americas, the organization that coordinates the Farmer to Farmer volunteer program for Haiti.

Rabbit production has greatly increased in the 7 years that Makouti has been working on it.

One of our next goals is to teach rabbit production to more Haitian coffee producers. The rabbits need shade, the coffee trees need to be fertilized and the coffee producers need a year round source of income and protein. As you can see from the photo, the coffee tree on the left is full of green berries. The rabbits don't eat or damage the coffee leaves.  They just enjoy the shade and fertilize the tree roots growing right under the cage. This is simplification of what really needs to be done, but is a good example of agricultural synergy.

Over the next 6 months, Makouti is planning 10 training sessions around the country, with rabbit producers to increase production quality, address new models of distribution, increase rabbit feed production, food safety and more project synergy. The industry is growing and with it the hope of many Haitian families.
Projects like these are what Haiti Coffee grants will be used for. So drink up, tell your friends and help Haiti Thrive !
Order now and think of giving coffee gifts for the holidays.
